Glasgow City Community Councils — Your Community Voice

Community councils exist to amplify the voice of every resident — not to govern, but to ensure that those who govern are always listening.

Established under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, Glasgow’s community councils give ordinary people a formal platform to engage with Glasgow City Council, police, planners, and other public bodies on behalf of their neighbourhood.

What Does a Community Council Do?

Your community council is a voluntary, non-party-political body made up of local residents who care about where they live. It is the only tier of representation that exists specifically for your neighbourhood — not a ward, not a constituency, but your street, your scheme, your community.

Community councils have the right to be consulted on planning applications, to attend public meetings, to raise issues with Glasgow City Council, and to speak up on everything from road safety and litter to new housing and local services.

They do not have legal powers or budgets — their power is the power of organised, informed community voice. When a community council speaks with one voice, public bodies must listen.

How to Engage With Your Community Council

You don’t need to be elected to get involved — the meetings are open to everyone. Here’s how to start.

01

Find Your Council

Use the ward directory to locate the community council covering your postcode or neighbourhood. Each council covers a defined geographic area.

02

Attend a Meeting

All meetings are open to the public. Check your council’s listing for dates, times, and venues. No registration required — just turn up.

03

Raise Your Issue

Bring your concern — planning, roads, antisocial behaviour, local services. Community councils can formally submit your concern to the relevant body.

04

Join or Stand
